New installation requires same settings as the previous installation

  • I work as a database administrator and need to install a new SQL Server 2005 instance on a newly installed Windows Server 20003 server named LuckySql. This new instance must have the same settings as the existing SQL Server 2005 instance on a server named UnluckySql. Can the default installation folder be used for the new SLQ Server instance on Unlulckysql? You will be able to refer to Luckysql to view the settings. Simply can we have the same settings as we in the new installation as we have in any other installation of the server?

LOL, this sounds like an interview question so much, you might be lucky and get a reply, no pun intended... 😛

Depends on what you mean by same settings, your question doesnt quite read right...

are you talking about a named instance install on unluckysql or a new install on luckysql with the settings from unluckysql.... 😉

You can refer the Installation document for Unluckysql which should be mentioning the settings.

AFAIK, I don't think you can use the installation folder of one instance to install the other.

  • I don't think you can share the same installation folder amongst multiple instances.

  • Yes I need to use the same installation which I have in my named installation on the same m\c.

  • We passed through the same requirement several years ago.

We created step-by-step instructions for every "How to..." procedure, so each process is very well documented now.

The brief description of this instruction with a check list is a written standard for us, especially helpful for the new and junior DBAs.

Now it is easy to create mimic.
