So the other day I was paying bills, and got curious about my electric bill. It was easily 2x what it had been last year at the same time. My first thought was, they raised the rates and I didn't notice, so I looked back at previous bills. August, my bills doubled! The problem was, I couldn't pull up the detailed bills from then to see what the rate was.

Then I got thinking, something *else* had changed in August...

I'd gotten my shiny new (used) PowerEdge R900 with 4x quad core Xeons, 64GB of RAM, dual 1200w power supplies...

    Hmm...

So, to test, I've shut it down for the month. Last night I fired up an app our electric company has that will show you your daily / weekly / monthly electric usage and took a look. There was a difference of 10kw/h use between the day the server was shut down, and the previous day...

Not quite enough to cover the entire increase I think, but enough to put a dent in it (I think the new NAS I put in is probably the other chunk, and I can't shut the NAS down.)

Sigh, so my fun toy is now a "gotta go plug it in before I can use it for stuff, and unplug it when I'm done" toy. I don't want to leave it plugged in when it's off, as the power supplies will still draw some power (and I'm too lazy right now to figure out how to get the DRAC card in it to handle powering on / off remotely)

Anyone want a nice rack-mount server?

DRACs are great when you have to power cycle remote servers, especially in hostile country.

So, Jason's basement is a hostile country now? Hmm... time to make some invasion plans. :w00t::w00t:

Call in SEAL team 6 to liberate the hostage server.

Invasion time! Release the hippos! :w00t:

Let's try sanctions first. We may be able to get him to give it up if we flood his box with alerts then refuse to allow him near it to fix the problem.

I shall never yield to your illegal and despicable sanctions! My ultimate power project shall not be denied in the glorious workers paradise of my basement!

    :hehe:

PS Lynn: THANK YOU for giving me just enough of a nudge to take a look at the DRAC option! Being able to power the box on and off with out having to go down to the basement for on, is so nice!
