    Good question. What I am trying to figure out is how Koen is ALWAYS the first to reply to QoD discussions?

    (I knew in SQL2012, it is 15K; so I was "assuming" that it might be same in 2014 too and also at the same I was thinking that "they might have increased the capability by few Ks"; then I thought "why anybody wants to create 15K partitions on a table? and they go saying "Oh God!! 15K is too less and I need few more Ks to complete it". Well choice selection of 15K was correct. 😀 )

    Thanks for the question. Here's a snippet from the referenced page.

    SQL Server 2014 supports up to 15,000 partitions by default. In versions earlier than SQL Server 2012, the number of partitions was limited to 1,000 by default. On x86-based systems, creating a table or index with more than 1000 partitions is possible, but is not supported.

    How many partitions it allows us to create on the 32-bit version isn't documented anywhere as far as I know, what we do know is that the number is more than 1000 (not 1000) but going above 1000, although it appears to be allowed up to some unknown number, is not supported. The QotD didn't aks how many were supported, but how many were possible.

    And then, even if the 32 bit version only allowed 1000, SQLS 2014 as a whole isn't limited by the capabilities of the 32-bit version.
