what is the best practice about SQL server on VM and pagefile on the same volume as the data and log files?

Disks are disks, even in most virtual environments. Stacking everything into a single location absolutely leads to a bottleneck.

You have to have a page file. So yeah, you're going to have it. Size and location are the only discussion points.

pagefiles are on the C:\ by default during install, you can however move it to another drive by itself. I add another drive just for the pagefile and move it over. Below is an article to do so.
