Always on HA On Windows Azure - Best Practice

  • I'm currently setting up a 2012 AoHA cluster in Windows Azure and looking for advice/recommendations around Lock Pages in Memory.

Is there any recommendation out there regarding assigning this to the SQL Service Account? If not what is the general opinion?

  • Jonathan's advice here [/url]would still be completely applicable to virtual machines, whether they're running in the cloud or not.

Within reason this is true however the virtualised environment Jonathan's article covers allows for some control over things like the Balloon driver and over allocation of RAM. In the Cloud we have no control over this. In principle I would say this increases the requirements to set LPIM, but also makes it more important to monitor memory usage, particularly the OS space.

What I was hoping was that someone would actually have played in this space, or there might be a Microsoft article covering this. So far nothing has come to light.

Jonathan's article is very good, but I noticed it was written pre Windows 2012 and SQL Server 2012, and it would be good to have current examples and information on which to base a decision.

For now LPIM is enabled. We'll see how this goes.
