  • Compound interest?

Yes, with rates at 0.5% in the UK for several years now I get your drift...

  • Does it all boil down to instant vs long-term gratification? Are money and knowledge/skill the same thing?

    Yes to both.

  • The problem that I have has never been learning new things, it has been retaining them when you move onto new projects. For example I have taken a VMWare 4.1 class and use VMWare daily for basic knowledge, but 90% of what I learned in that class is lost because I do not have the opportunity to practice it daily and the same goes for all of my SQL classes.

  • ". . . We can't all be superstars, or be amazing programmers, but we can all improve our skills and the more we invest in ourselves, the more it's likely to pay off for us in the future."

Seems obvious, Steve, but I am afraid you are preaching to the choir: IMO SSC is frequented by those who want to learn something new and acquire new skills.

    Thanks for making it possible!

I am positive you will find it handy, Ed. Virtualization is the current trend: MS Azure gives you just a pre-configured VM and a virtual SQLS. I think you made a good investment for a near future.

  • I am not necessarily complaining or unhappy to learn new stuff, I just personally would like to retain more of it LOL

In the educational methodology I use, we have a maxim that "number of times over the material equals certainty and results". We also assume that "knowing comes from doing more than from reading".
