  • Excellent stuff Perry, great to see articles like this.

  • Thank you, combine all 3 parts and you have all you need to create a cluster testbed from scratch

  • Super article Perry. Thanks for putting time and capture each stuff. I will add it to my briefcase for future reference.

I had done three cluster installation in last 15 days and had found two issue on all of them.

    1. Cannot Add a second node to an SQL Server 2008 Failover Cluster. Reason SQL Agent is not shown in the resource group. I had to add it manually using

Cluster restype "SQL Server Agent" /create /DLL:sqagtres.dll

and change configuration state in this registry key from 2 to 1

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\ConfigurationState

    2. Even after node 2 is installed I could not add it to cluster in Cluster administrator as services starts and then goes offline. This article from Microsoft had been a great help.

    SQL DBA.

  • Great series Perry. I love all the screen shots. Now I need to get a large external drive so I can do this on my laptop.

  • Excellent stuff Perry. Very useful series.

Where can we see more about the FreeNAS?

  • Thank you all for your feedback. I created this article as to me it seems the DBA is always an afterthought in most organisations.

"oh he\she only looks after the database they dont do anything else".

I've worked in an environment where you phone a customer and find the db admin has been given the boot because reductions are being made. Not now, using this guide you are able to swing your clustering axe while wearing your AD hat and still find time to do your day job 🙂

since writing the article FreeNAS has moved up editions from .7.2 to 8.0 and is totally different. The legacy version info can be found here. Links to download are here[/url]

  • Today I was able to successfully complete all the 3 parts of this series. This was a great learning experience for me as I got the chance to build a cluster environment from scratch. In big companies, it is quite tough to gain this experience as there would be different teams (windows, network, storage, database team) involved in completing portions of the entire project. I would highly recommend this 3 part series to people who have not had the chance to work in building cluster environments in its entirety and this material would definetly help them to understand the various concepts in detail.

Many thanks to Perry again for sharing this excellent material with detailed screenshots. I only faced some issues while working on part 2 as I was not familiar with some networking concepts. However, the discussions with Perry on the forums kind of helped a lot.

    Thanks
