Life is Short

  • It's sad to hear this news - I never knew him, but he sounds a great guy.

Just goes to show, what's around the next corner is unknown.

I like your philosophy of taking control of your career. It's right to caution about balance, I've swayed from going hard out at my job (and certifications) to just going through the motions in my career - and neither one is a good place to be for a prolonged period of time - balance is the key.

btw, I think your mentoring experiment is a great idea.

    cheers

    Martin.

  • Sorry to hear about the loss Steve. I'm going to go down & give my kids a hug now.

  • I am very sorry to hear about your loss. God Bless you and David's family.

  • Sorry to hear about the loss of a friend, especially with a wife and children left behind. The family is in my prayers and this is definitely a good reminder that we need to make sure we have a our priorities straight. As my pastor says regularly, no one, in their last days, wishes that they had spent more time working.

  • Sorry for your loss and the families...you are all in my prayers

  • Fortunately in IT we don't have many occupational hazzards (so long as we use a laptop pad and stretch out leggs every half hour). However, balancing our screen time and personal life is somthing we all have to be conscious of, especially those of us who love our jobs too much.

  • Steve,

Sorry to hear about the lost. My thought goes out to you and your friend family.

  • Thanks, everyone for the kind words and thoughts.

  • I know life is short and fragile. My friend Tony went jogging last Sat, came home and collapsed and died with massive heart attack. He was only 55 years old, left a wife and two kids.

I don't want to stuck with a crapy job and difficult co-workers either, but sometimes it is not up to me to get my 'ideal' job.

  • Thanks for this message Steve - I am sorry for your loss.

I learned this same lesson last year when I lost my wife after a long battle with cancer. Balance, with an eye to the future, but both feet firmly planted in the present. Let's live with purpose and, respect for those precious souls who journey with us. Yes life is too short and it should be, and when we get to the end of it, whenever that is, I want to say wow! what a ride.

  • Condolences and prayers to your friend's family and all who knew him.

On the subject of living for the present as well as the future, I like to remind people that living a long but miserable life really isn't that worthwhile a goal. Live well, and do what you can to make that last, but emphasize living well. That means different things to different people, but it works as a rule. It can also be worded as "be true to your own goals".

  • My cousin is now in the hospital, the outlook is not good. We grew up together and are more like brothers than cousins. Life is short. Make the most of it.

  • I am so sorry for your loss.

  • I'm sorry to hear about your friend. This is the kind of thing that feels like such a kick in the gut. You simply can't plan/prepare for it.
