server 2008 express and .mdf

  • I am a stranger venturing into SQL-land, so please bear with me!

In VS 2005 Express with SQL Express 2005 there was no problem attaching a .mdf database to the local server.

When I switched to the 2008 version (installed "with tools") I'm notified that i have to install a "tool" to accomplish this.

I searched the net for umpteen hours, but no clarification was found.

What tool should I install? I'totally lost in the woods.

    Pondware

  • What is notifying you of this? Is this an error message when you try to detach the database?

If so, please list the full text of the error message.

  • Hello Brandie,

I added a local database to my project when it appeared to accept only files for the compact version. When I defined my database as xxx.mdf I got the message that this extension can only be used when I had a "tool" to make this possible.

No further description or reference was given, and looking for "tool" on MSDN leads to heaven knows how many references.

So I'very curious WHAT tool to search for, where to find it and how to use it.

    Any suggestion ?

I hope this clears up my previous, somewhat cryptic initial question.

  • Did you install the client tools for SQL Server 2008? Perhaps this is what the message is referencing.
