Backup drives

  • Hi Guys,

Would it be wise to backup a database to a drive where the data file resides and can a backup reside on the same drive as a log file?

    Regards

    IC

  • Data, log and backup can all reside on the same drive.

    Is is wise? NO!!!

If you lose the drive, you have lost your data AND your backups

Ideally, 3 separate disks... 1 for database, 1 for logs and 1 for backups... and make sure thay are physically different spindles, not just one disk partitioned into 3 drives or one large raid array carved up into 3 luns.

  • And performance will be bad, especially if the Data & Log are on the same drive.
