Hi.
Is it possible to move the position of the total column in a data matrix so that it appears to the left of the data rather than the right? If not is it possible to manually crate a totals column and add it to the matrix? Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes it is, and it quite easy once you find the option.
Create your Matrix and add your total fields in the by selecting the subtotal option.
Once you have a total field you will see a little green triangle at the top right of the field, right click on this and select properties. The last option in the properties is called Layout, change the position from After to Before. This will not change how it looks on the design layout payne but when you preview your report the total field will move to the left of the report.

Thanks for your help. On this occasion I manually created it as a row group but I'll give it a try the next time I create matrix table.
