ok, so im typing in Outlook. If i hold shift+2 i get the " symbol, shift+' gives me the @ symbol, etc etc. as expected.
then i open sql server and its backways! also, i cant find the hash charachter.
If i try sql server from the actual server, the keyboard layout is fine, as expected. Its only on my machine that the keyboard layout is different for sql server, than it is for every other app.
Anyone have any idea why this is? Its driving me crazy!

this isnt a one time. its been going on for many weeks. and nobody only the sys admins have access to my pc. its either locked or turned off each time i leave my desk.

Exactly what do you mean by backways ?
Please describe in more detail what is happening.

More detail. OK.
i have outlook open. im typing an email. to use the @ sign i hold shift+'.
to use the " charachter i hold shift +2 . this is as expected as its the same layout as on my keyboard.
But in sql server managment studio if i hold shift+' in sql server i get the " symbol, and if i hold shift+2 i get the @ symbol.
then after a few hours it fixes it itself in sql server managment studio. its like a localization issue, wher charachter mapping is getting messed up every so often, and fixing itself, but only for SSMS.

I believe that you are inadvertently switching the input language between your desired language (UK english ?) and the standard US English.
Exactly how this is done depends on the OS you are using.
On my system the keyboard language changes when i press the left Alt key, and the left shift key without pressing anything else.
In other words press left alt, press left shift, release shift, release left alt.
Every time you do this the layout should switch.

Im using windows 7. Ive tried the alt left shift tip, but it does not make a differrence.
Another thing i am seeing is when using single quotes.
One minute , i can press the key for single quote and a single quote appears. then something changes( i dont know what), and if i press the single quote key once, nothing happens, but if i press it twice, two single quotes appear.

This little annoyance had been troubling me for some time, especially annoying for me as I was using SQL Server Management Studio through Terminal Services so had to log out and in again and sometimes wait for someone else to finish with the account etc.....
So I can gladly confirm that Stefan_G is indeed right, pressing [Alt] and [Shift] together without pressing any other keys will indeed swap between the input languages set up on your system. The reason this had been happening to me so much was because I was using [Alt] [Shit] Y to re-do changes in my window,
