Hi,
I know about clustering and it is used as high availability solution. But i dont have any practical experuence. I have my own laptop and a windows 2003 desktop. But i really want to have a practical idea about how it works? can anyone point me to the right direction either an article or something?

Hi,
Take a look at the Microsoft white paper SQL Server 2005 Failover Clustering
I would also suggest that you try and implement a clustered configuration. You can do this on a single machine using virtualisation software such as VMWare.

I don't think you can setup a failover cluster between your desktop and your laptop, but there is a good whitepaper about setting up a failover cluster between two virtual machines.

how can i do virtualisation? can you tell my how to start mine is windows XP sp2 and i have sql 2005 developer edition.
I want to configure cluster and also install sql culuster how can i ? what is VMware is it for free? can i download it?

VmWare has several free products you can download.Not sure which will run on Windows XP but you should be able to find that info on their site. http://www.vmware.com/
As an alternative MS has Virtual PC 2007 which is free as well and runs on windows XP.
Once you have installed your virtualisation software follow the instructions from the articles.

Last time I checked, if you go the VMWare route, you would want to look to install VMWare ESX Server.

Achtang, you will need either VMWare server 2 or Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Enterprise R2.
ESX server will not install to a laptop, Virtualpc will not support multiple virtual SCSI adapters. I can send you details of "how to" under MS VS2005 R2 ifyou like. Download either of these virtualisation prodcuts free of charge from the vendor site (you have to register first). You will also need 2 copies of windows server 2003 enterprise to support MSCS. Let me know if you want the technical paper and i'll send it over, otherwise it is due to be published on SSC at some point

hi perry thanks for that. I downlad Virtual PC 2007 and i start to install win2003 server but it says to put the boot disk on. do i have to put the windows 2003 server OS disk?
and i have 50 GB hard drive and a 250 gb which is FAT. I really want to install and work on failover cluster how can i ? 🙁 pls help

You will need MicroSoft Virtual Server 2005 R2 or VMWare Server 2 and Windows 2003 server Enterprise. I'm assuming the 250GB drive is external storage? If so, thats no good. You could try it, but i doubt it will be successful. You will need the windows server cd and mount it to the virtual cd drive for that VM and install the OS as usual
