Installing SQL Server 2008 R2

  • I got the following when attempting a new installation

"Unable to open the Windows Installer file 'Z:\x64\setup\sql_engine_core_inst_msi\sql_engine_core_inst_msi'. The syste, cannot open the device or file specified"

If I choose 'Retry' it fails again and if I choose 'Cancel' the installation stops.

Should I have installed SQL Server 2008 first? Any advice on installing SQL Server 2008 would be gratefully appreciated. I am 'flying by the seat of my pants' on this one!

  • Please check that DVD.....may be some files are missing...

Check the size of the all files with the given size in SITE.....

  • If the drive "Z" is still available, try to copy the contents of the DVD to the location specified in the error message

  • I have located an original Microsoft disc so I am going to try with that later today. It would appear that the downloads are rubbish. I will keep you updated.

    Thanks

  • Are you installing from a network drive or a local drive?

The SQL Server install is not very tolerant of slow drives or slow systems. There are numerous timing tests done during the SQL Server install process and if one of these fails due to nothing more than a slow system then your install fails.

I have seen a number of failures to run a msi file that were due to the install media being on a (slow) network drive. Other failures have been due to a slow virtual server, where either services did not start within the expected time or msi files did not complete their work within the expected time.

  • Sorry that I have not been in touch but I have been off ill.

I managed to load SQL Server 2008 R2 from the cd which was fine on the evaluation server. However when I loaded the SSMS on my workstation I found that it overwrote my Enterprise Manager (we still have a few systems that run under SQL Server 2000). I am now in the process of removing SSMS 2008 to re-install my Enterprise Manager.

Can I install SSMS 2008 in a separate location so that it will not interfere with Enterprise Manager?
