Getting Error While installing SQL Server 2005 (x86)..

  • Hi Team

While installing SQL Server, getting the below piece error constantly.

    Event Type:Error

    Event Source:MsiInstaller

    Event Category:None

    Event ID:10005

    Description:

Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 -- Error 29503. The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."

The error is (1053) The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Trying to install the SQL Server, using a valid Service Account. Even trying to install the SQL Server in 'Local Service Account' also giving the same error. Not explicitly passing any port no. Rebooted the Server as well prior to install SQL Server, still no luck

Please suggest how to fix the issue to install the SQL Server smoothly.

    Thanks.

  • 1) There was an older version of SQL Native Access Client (SNAC) on the machine

There was a bug in an earlier (early Pre-RTM) build of SNAC that prevented it from being upgraded. The solution here is to completely remove SQL and SNAC from the machine and rerun setup. SNAC will have a separate entry in Add/Remove Programs so be sure to remove it doing so after you've removed all of the other SQL Components.

    2) Norton Firewall 2004 on Windows 2003

This is a problem with Norton that causes problems starting the SQL DB Engine service. It's been reported to Symantec but I'm not aware of any fix for it. My understanding is this only happens on Windows 2003 which is not a supported platform for Norton Firewall 2004. Norton Firewall 2006 doesn't support Windows 2003 either. The work around is to disable or remove Norton Firewall from the system prior to installing SQL Server. This is not an issue on non Windows 2003 platforms.

  • Thanks for giving the recommendation.

However, I am using the 'SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edtn', not Express.

Do the solution provided by you, will hold good?

    Thanks.

  • Did you try starting SQL Service in Single User mode from the command prompt?

Usually it gives the right picture there.

  • Pradeep your response is looking very strange to me..!

I could not able to finish the installation of the SQL Server Service .... while starting the service the erro:

".....timely fashion" error msg is appearing..!

Running it in 'Single user mode ' would only arise if the SQL Server is healthy and installed successfully.

    Thanks.
