Can't install Express Edition and Management Console on Win 7 64-bit machine

  • I posted this originally on the Compact Edition forum in error.

I've just got a new machine with Win 7 Premium Home 64-bit installed. I had SQL Server Express installed on my XP machine with no problems, and installed it (and the Management Console) on the new Win 7 machine. When I try to run either I get the error "Requires .NET v 4.0.21006". This (along with v 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5, is in fact installed. If I try to reinstall, I get the same error, but if I ignore it the installation starts and runs without problem for a little while, but when it gets to the "Select service" screen it will not let me select anything! Then, of course, the install will not proceed. The MS download sites are of little help.

What is the secret to installing and running SQL Server Express & Management Console on a Win 7 64-bit machine? And why am I getting the error(s). I have given up!

    Any insights/suggestions/directions gratefully accepted!

SQL Server 2005 Express comes in only x86 that is 32bits but there is a binary created for x64 install and that is the download with 32 at the end. So check below and download version you need in the link below.

  • Thanks for the reply. However, although this gets me a lot further, the install of both SQL Server Express and the Management Studio still fails. :hehe: I tried both versions of SQLEXPR -- with the 32 on the end, and without -- and the 64-bit version of the Management Studio.

I guess my only option is to install SQL Server Express and the Management Studio on my XP laptop, but I really don't want to do this. Is there any support option that won't cost me $95 from MS?

I cannot believe I am the only person having this problem. If it is an OS problem, I can't get support from MS as the OS is OEM, and the HP support people have no clue at all. I'd upgrade to Win7 Pro if that would solve the problem or get me MS support, but I have no reason to do so otherwise and would hate to just throw the money away.

If you are talking about paid support I have some given to me to give to people who actually need it. I have not had reason to give these to anybody because I usually resolve issues to a valid solution. So your problem is related to Windows 7 saying SQL Server 2005 is not compatible with it. But I know you can install the full version that is the developer edition so you need to either get the developer edition which comes in x64 or install Visual Studio before installing the SQL Server 2005 Express because I am running two SQL Server 2005 one Express and the other the developer edition but I am running x86 that is 32bits Windows 7 Ultimate.

So I am running 2005 Express in Windows 7 x86 Ultimate so you need to make sure you install .NET 3.5 SP1 and Visual Studio 2008 and then try again.
