Steve, I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said in the article. Of course, this is the line for the bean-counters:
It's a cheap way to retain an employee when you might spend three or four times the price of the event on hiring a new employee.

Much of what Steve said could be described as "recharging your batteries." I think we all need our batteries recharged from time to time, and getting out of your normal routine and mixing with people from other companies and perspectives is a great way to do that. Hopefully the bean counters can see value in having batteries that are charged.
And although it's great what we can do now with email, web conferencing, concalls, etc., it's still beneficial to be able to meet people face-to-face. I enjoyed meeting several people I had been working with for awhile but hadn't ever met in person. And also seeing others who I had met before, but hadn't seen in awhile.
I thought the PASS Summit 2009 earlier this month was very worthwhile to attend. Good to see you again, Steve.
