| a better example might show an argument passed in as a replacement char for the unprintables, and returning the cleaned up string.

I'm curious what happens if a Unicode character that has a codepoint > 255 is encountered... what happens then?
Could ASCII not be substituted with UNICODE? Sorry if I'm answering my own question
