sql server 2012 active/passive cluster with AG read only in the future

  • Have a current 2008r2 active/passive cluster with logs shipping to a read only sometimes reporting server. I got part of what I requested that we get to replace the current cluster with new 2012 active/passive cluster but not getting the RO AG node I was hoping for. Will have to upgrade current log ship server to 2012 (it also had some sharepoint db's on it, and another instance on same physical box with SSAS and some light SSRS) I did not want to have a multiple of instances server to be part of the AG solution. So for now will just log ship. Hoping that the next year I can get stand alone instance to use in a AG read-only solution and move all reporting off of curent cluster (this capability has not yet been implemented by the 3rd party vendor yet to do this and will not even be ready until mid next year). My simple question after laying all the variable out is this, when I build my new

2012 Active Passive (yes this is Enterprise edition) SQL Cluster, is there anything I need to do at this time to make the system AG capable next year if/when I get the new instance to make it a RO AG node? Or is this something I can do in the future with the 2012 Active/Passve SQL Cluster.

You can enable the instance for AO groups now or do it when you need, there is an outage required on the sql server service

  • So if I need to I can just add the AG on later (say 6 months later) on to the cluster

  • yes whenever you need to
