Install SQL2014 alongside SQL2008 Windows 2008 Cluster

  • Hello all,

I have a 2 node Windows 2008R2 Cluster with 2 instances of SQL 2008R2 installed, I would like to install a third instance on this 2 node cluster (SQL2014)

Do we think this is possible? advisable?

The current 2 instances are one SQL2008 PROD instance and one SQL2008 DEV instance - the PROD however can allow some downtime it is end month reporting.

    Any comments appreciated.

  • SQL 2014 is supported on Server 2008R2 SP1 or above, so aslong as the cluster is running atleast OS service pack 1 you will be fine to install it.

However, does the cluster have the resources required to allow the running of a 3rd instance without impacting the other 2.

  • Yes there are ample resources 🙂 I just need to add another disk.

IF I go down this route I will update on the outcome.

  • I'd say you would need another 5 disks

    One for the instance binaries,

    One for TempDB

    One for User Data

    One for User Logs

    One for Backups

Wouldn't advise putting all of them on one drive, even if this is only going to be a none prod instance.
