im studying for an MCSE. Done 461,462 now studying towards 463. Mainly by using cbt nuggets, the Microsoft training kits and practice exams. But I think I've missed out by not setting up some virtual servers on my laptop and working through some examples.
I know almost nothing about virtual server software, so my question is, what should I use, and my main considerations are budget and ease of use. Trial software that only lasts a few months is of no use to me.
Any thoughts?

I used to use the free VM Ware version, but recently I switched over to Virtual Box. The advantage of Virtual Box is the availablility to create snapshots. For the OS perhaps you can use the trial versions of the server software. If you're just using it as a base for one or two SQL instances you can also use the desktop Windows. Of course then you won't be able to setup advanced feautures like Always On.

I installed virtual box, and used a development copy of 2008 r2 and Probably going to install SQL express. However I have a copy of 2014 Dev. It's currently installed on windows 7, can this be used multiple times as its dev? Also I'd prefer windows 2012 but a trial edition won't work for me as 3 months is far to short, are there any other options?
By the way virtual box appears to work a treat.
