running local or network DB's for speed

  • Hi

I'm looking at optimising access speed on some GIS databases by moving them to either their own virtual server running SQL Server 2008 r2 or onto a virtual server running the program that will be doing 90% of the processing and a local install of SQL Server 2008 r2.

My question is how does the speed of a network connection between virtual servers compare to running one virtual server as above. Both SQLServer and the GIS application (ArcGIS Server) use a lot of CPU and ram.

A recent trial nearly stopped all the databases on the server where the GIS databases sit. Other options include replication which we run at the moment.

Any examples or ideas greatly appreciated.

  • Quick thought, unless you have 2 x LotsOfRAM on a single server, run ArcGis and SQL Server on two separate servers, my guess is that if those two start to compete for the RAM, network latency is not going to matter too much.

  • my thoughts exactly although both ArcGIS and SQL manage memory really well. When I look at the performance the cpu's max out.

    Thanks.
