Drive Allocation Unit Size(cluster) for Data/Log/TempDB drive/SystemDB drive/SQL installation drive

  • I have read that formatting the drives as 64k allocation unit size/cluster provides the best throughput for SQL server performance. What drives should I partition as 64K which is mentioned below?

    Data/Log/TempDB drive/System DB drive/SQL Installation drive?

    details:

    ---------

    *Windows Server 2012 R2 standard

    *SQL 2014 Enterprise (Clustered)

    *RAID-10 disks

    Many thanks.

  • This is not performed exclusively on its own, it's part of a serious of steps and includes setting the underlying RAID stripe size and partition offset.

What work have you done around this?

  • I've formatted all drives with 64k (data drive/log drive/system db drive/ tempdb drive/ sql installation drive)

Also the stripe size is 128K set at RAID controller level.
