Equal sized data files?

  • When adding an extra data file to a database, is there any (performance / backup / any other related) benefit to adding one of the same size?

I know in tempdb, the equal sizing is best practice.

Is this the same for user databases? If so, why?

BTW, this is for Sharepoint 2010 config databases in case it's relevant.

    Thanks in advance.

a Sharepoint config database is going to be fairly small based on the designed usage, content databases grow fairly large.

Why do you feel the need to start adding files to all your databases, its not a Best Practice as it is with TempDB
