SQL 2012 cluster downgrade to 2008 R2

  • Ok I'm new, but not new enough not to have seen many of the complete uninstall advice out there. With that in mind, I desperately need some good opinion.

The client changed requirements (first time for everything, right?) and we need to reload the cluster with 2008 R2 (two-node, SAN, not very large). Of course going back to bare metal boxes would take requisitions and time to have the entire cluster wiped and returned to me back in the domain, etc.

I know this is the preferable method, but can a combination of removing the nodes from the install center and uninstalling 2012 adequately clear the boxes so that 2008 R2 can be added without leaving hidden registry land mines and things later?

  • Rebuilding the cluster is the least of your problems. SQL databases cannot be downgraded in any way. Any databases attached to that 2012 instance are 2012 database and they will not attach/restore to 2008, no matter what you do.

You're looking at recreating any DB that you need to move down to 2008.

  • Wow my bad. Sorry, left out that HUGE detail, all we have right now is the configured cluster without databases or logins save the service accounts. That's an important detail I should have provided.

  • a clustered uninstall takes minutes to uninstall and is a clean way of removing the instance, you may then install your chosen sql server edition to re install.

Running SQL server 2008 on a Windows 2012 cluster will bring increased cluster support too, so all good there
