Metadata

  • We've recently decided to add fields to track the date updated and date added of some records, plus the id of the manager who performed these operations.

My boss suggested creating new tables to store this metadata instead of putting the fields within the table itself.

    Which would be better?

  • Difficult problem.

I would probably go for the separate table. This keeps both functionalities (data and auditing) neetly separated and gives you the greatest flexibility in the future.

It will also avoid any problems if an application uses a select * in a query.

  • I think you are looking for a metadata management tool.

A few good ones available. Google "Metadata Management Software"

The main idea is to capture metadata on a schedule, then have it available for search and impact analysis.

    very handy.
