Cannot set up alias for named instance

  • Greetings,

I am trying to set up an alias for the SQL Server 2012 named instance (the default instance is 2008, there is also a named instance of SS 2005) on my PC. I can set up successful aliases, using Configuration Manager, for the default instance (SS 2008) and the SS 2005 named instance. However, following the same steps, I cannot set up an alias for the SS 2012 named instance, that works. I.e., I can set up the alias, but when I go to either Management Studio (2008 or 2012) or SSIS, it doesn't recognize the alias, it times out & says the server can't be found.

I would appreciate any ideas of why the SS 2012 alias is failing, but others work.

    Thanks,

    Randy

  • Can you try create Alias using cliconfg.exe?

  • Isn't cliconfg just an alternate interface for SQL Server Configuration Manager, which I've been using? When I open cliconfg, I see all of the aliases I set up using SS Configuration Manager, with all the same settings for each of them. This is true whether I use the 64-bit or 32-bit versions (b/c I set up both types of aliases in SS Configuration Manager.)

  • cliconfg.exe should be the x64 version. I've been using it (even it's an old tool) and it created the aliases under the x64 "SQL Native Client 10.0 Configuration". Ok.

Are both instances using same port or you've put different ports?

Concretely on my environment with two instances I use different ports for sql 2008 and sql 2012, and I have enabled the ports via the Firewall.
