- NetSend notifications will not be sent I have this message in the error log for SQL Server Agent, which is running. I have tried bouncing the service and the server with no luck. Running on Windows Server 2003. I cannot detrmine why the service will not start and cannot figure out how to start it.

In Administration Tools, Service manager, have you tried starting the 'Messenger' service (make it automatic if currently manual). If it doesn't start the reason should be in the Event Viewer. If the messenger service is running on the server you whould be able to type "NET SEND yourservername somemessage" in a DOS window and see "somemessage" appear as a popup on the server. Hope this helps. I am not familiar with windows 2003 so I guessing the services and tools are the same as on other verisons of windows. Peter

We're running SQl 2008 R2 on a virtual server (WIN server 2008) and I dont' see the "Messenger" service under services. If someone found it using this scenario I would like to know what I'm doing wrong. I was told it was discontinued in WIN 7 and Server 2008.

| I am in the same setup, SQL Server 2008 R2 on a Windows 2008 Server, and I do not see this service. Would love to see a resolution for this, as I hate having errors out on my system...

My research shows it was discontinued by MS. (don't you just love 'em?) I've tried WinSent, Sent and WinSentMessenger. None of them work. Also tried the native MSG.exe which is still in Win7 and I assume Server 08, but couldn't figure out how to make it work like I wanted. I want to be able to send network messages programmatically to users who are blocking or being blocked. MSG.exe may work via cmdshell, but I got away from the task and haven't gotten back to it.

No solution on my end. I feel that MSG.exe could be used with cmdshell, but haven't spent the time to experiment. It's more cumbersome than the old Net Send. To make matters worse, we are deploying more and more WIN 7 boxes. So, if a solution ever does appear, the new computers will probably need a software or service install/activated.
