can you remove the contents of setup bootstrap\update cache?
Its taking a few gbs on my system drive

You can remove the files from the update cache folder as these are generally install files left over when applying a service pack or a cumulative update.

You're the only person I found who said the folder "\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Update Cache" can be safely removed. Could you please elaborate a little more about that? Has it been tested? Whether will it be possible to repair corrupted installation of SQL Server if necessary after removing that folder? .. . or installing next CU?

like for instance Beatrice Popa at her Technet blog[/url]. But nowadays her article can possibly be quite behind the curve.
So far I haven't found any strong argument neither to keep that folder on a disk nor to safely remove it's content. Your additional explanation would be very appreciated as there are lots of rumors about that. Many people confuse SQL Update cache folder with "\Windows\Installer" folder which definitely cannot be cleaned up.

We have done so on 300 + servers managed in our estate over the last 5 years and not once have we had an issue, future service packs \ CU's have always installed without issue and although we have only had one server crash that had to have the master \ msdb DBs restored \ rebuilt, no issues were encountered there either.
