Data center migration

  • I hope this forum is "general" enough for this question. I figure most people here have experienced this issue in one way or another.

We are migrating our data center and we are concerned about our SQL servers with relative data.

Our goal is to move the server as smooth as possible to the new location, which is only about 200 yards around the corner, but there are bumps, door entries, rough sidewalks, etc.

Does anybody on here have some best practices regarding server transportation he or she would be willing to share?

    Thanks in advance.

  • So you are physically moving all the machines, not moving SQL Server instances from one machine to another? Assuming that SQL Server databases are on a SAN, are you moving the SAN as well?

  • Thanks for the reply.

Yes, we are physically moving the servers.

We are trying to strategically figure out the order though and the safest method of transport.

One person I conversed with said something about using rubber mats to place on the ground and also using a specialized dolly.

  • OK. I suspect that this not the best site to ask this question. After all, it does not matter whether you have SQL Server, Oracle or something else running on those boxes.

I would suggest that you try a more hardware-oriented site.

  • Couple of thoughts....

Validate you backups. Test the networking at the new location. Make sure you have adequate power at the new location.

There are specialized powered lifts for moving servers but that sounds like overkill for your situation. I would use a padded cart or dolly. Pad it yourself as needed with moving blankets, bubble wrap, etc. You certainly want to minimize any shocks to the server which could kill the drives. If there is external storage you need to address that.

Have a plan for racking and lots of extra hands. Try not to be the guy with the server balanced on his head. Good luck.

  • Yea, I was a bit concerned about that. Thank you for taking the time. My apologies.

These are some great pointers. Thank you for the feedback! I definitely appreciate it.
