Buying SQL - License

  • We need to buy MSQL Server 2008 Standard or 2012 for a very light application.

    I have quote:

    228-09884 Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Standard - License - $1863.58

server - MOLP: Open Business - Win - Single Language

    359-05717 Microsoft SQL Server 2012 - License - 1 user CAL - 200.98

MOLP: Open Business - Win - Single Language

    P73-05762 Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Standard - License - 849.33

processors - MOLP: Open Business - Single Language

    R18-04281 Microsoft Windows Server 2012 - License - 1 user CAL 32.34

    - MOLP: Open Business - Single Language

    Product Subtotal 1,946.23

    Tax 0.00

    Total 1,946.23

Can someone help me to understand in English what is behind this quote?

Reading from microsoft.com, regarding MOLP: Open Business

    Microsoft Open License Program (MOLP)

MOLP is a volume discount agreement, designed for organizations with 2 to 500 PCs. The licenses are perpetual and media and software assurance are priced separately.

    Agreement Terms:

There is no contract and licenses can be purchased for a period of 2 years at the entry level pricing

    Question:

IF MOLP is perpetual, why “licenses can be purchase for a period of 2 years”? What does it mean?

Does this type of license will need to be renewed after 2 years?

Can someone recommend me exactly what license to buy?

Again, I need SQL Server 2008 or 2012.

Also WINDOWS Server 2008 or 2012. I need both license for unlimited time.

    Thank you very much!

PD: We cannot go with a SQL Express.

No, it means that after 2 years you can't get the lower MOLP pricing without buying another 5 licenses. But don't take advice from a public forum on licensing. Contact Microsoft to make sure what you're doing complies with the licensing terms.

  • Thank you for your reply.

I already tried that. I called Microsoft and they forwarded my question to one MS Software distributor.

They offered too many options. I was more confuse after talking to them.

I know I need to read about it and prepare myself to make a smart decision by myself. The problem is that right now I'm too busy. I'm developing the App that will be hosted on this server. I'm supposed to finish everything in 2-3 weeks.

I need help finding something concrete (hardware, OS and SQL).

What is the cheapest option for installing a server with Windows 2012 Standard Edition and SQL Server 2012 Standard Edition?

Where is the best place to buy it? Amazon? ebay? CompUSA? CDW? etc?

Should I buy an OEM version for both: Windows and MSQL or not? The OS and SQL will be dedicated to this server forever.

I'll appreciate any advice. Thank you again!

  • Sad that after talking with a recommended reseller and Microsoft directly that you landed on a public forum asking for advice. I hope someone from Microsoft sees this thread. Unfortunately this is an all too common problem with not just theirs, but many large company's licensing models and reseller networks.
