When I am typing in a new sqlquery how can I turn on the syntax check option or whatever it is called. In VBA for access as I type a list comes up validating what I am typing. Is there something like that for SQL?

I believe that you are talking about Intellisense. You can turn it on globally in SSMS by going to Tools -> Options -> Text Editor -> Transact-SQL -> Intellisense

You may find that the Intellisense that comes with SQL 2008 ain't that great.
ApexSQL do a free Intellisense AddIn for SSMS. One to try, if you like.
