Active flag on IP Addresses flag of TCP/IP Properties in Configuration Manager

  • I have two instances on a server. I'm looking in SQL Server Configuration Manager, under the TCP/IP properties for each of the instances. For the IP Address 123.123.123.123 the active flag on Instance A is Yes, the active flag on Instance B is No. Instance B is named, Instance A is default.

Can anyone shed some light on what causes this flag to flip between Yes and No?

Currently I can't connect using that IP address to Instance B, but I can to Instance A.

  • Is IpAll Dynamic Port set to 0 on the instance? Or is it set to the same port as default instance?

  • The Dynamic Port is set to blank for all IPs including IPAll on both instances.

The default instance is using port 1433 on all IPs. The named is using 4322 on all IPs but one. That one IP is using 1433 but isn't active on the default instance.
