SQL Server 2008 R2 cluster licensing

  • Hi Experts,

I am planning to set 2 node active/passive cluster with two sql instances in sql server 2008 r2 in two Virtual nodes with 2 virtual CPU each.

I will install sql server enterprise edition to set up this cluster.

Any idea how many processor license we need to buy for this active/passive cluster with two sql instances?

    Regards,

    Bipan

  • Truely active passive and in the event that it does go active active you can make the cluster active passive again within 30 days?

Now as your talking about virtual nodes, what type of licensing do you already have for your virtual hosts? Are you covered under the unlimited virtualisation usage of having SQL 2008 R2 DataCentre for all CPU's within your virtual farm which can host SQL?

Minimum I would say 2 Enterprise CPU licenses to cover the Active node. But with something as complicated as licensing we always say "contact your Microsoft reseller" as they can advise you better than what we can and they can get the true word from Microsoft as to what you actually need.

  • As far as I understand it, you will need a license for all four processors, as you cannot guarantee that the two instances are running at the same physical host. Also, please note that two-node clusters are supported by Standard Edition of SQL Server, which could reduce your costs a great deal.
