Windows XP SP 3 32 bit P4 2GB RAM
Installation completed of SQL Server 2000, but not able to login, no service found in services.msc nor when I check :
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn there is no sqlserver.exe. When at command prompt i searched I found it in :
C:\sql2ksp3\x86\binn
After re-installation of 2-3 times, I think its time to write here. Basically, I am oracle DBA, but on my this home PC, I want to install sql server 2000 for my friend's query (performance related one sql want to check here).
Kindly tell me what to do ?

I had a problem getting the patch for SQL Server 2008 to run. I wrote up the process Microsoft used to get me running again here:

You might consider using the same approach. I don't know that it will work, but sysinternals is free and easy to use, so it might help.

I am pulling up the thread after very late, but with the same problem status. After formating the C:, fresh installatation of XP with 3 SP, reinstallation of SQL Server 2000, problem is same i.e.
No able to login, no service in services.msc and moreover there is no sqlserver.exe.
When I checked your suggested link and I tried with :
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727>caspol.exe -machine -reset
Microsoft (R) .NET Framework CasPol 2.0.50727.42
Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
ERROR: Invalid option: -reset
For usage information, use 'caspol -?'
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727>
Kindly help me, what is the issue?

anything in your event viewer or logs after the setup procedure?

Thank you very much for your reply and time given to my request. At this moment, I am in my office, I shall follow the suggestation by today evening and will post the outcome with Event log contents. I hope, I would be able to post the contents of log almost same steps for XP (Professional) too.

Surprise....
There is no entry named MSSQLServer in Event viewer found for application log. How it is possible, installer "installed" the sql server 2000 succesufully messaged, but there is no entery in services.msc nor anything in event log.

Just a little doubt; is it all due to I am trying to install Enterprise Edition on the XP machine, which is not a server OS ? Can I retry to go with Personal Edition please ?
But again question arise, then SQL Server Enterprise Edition don't support Windows XP ?

You can't install the Enterprise Edition of SQL server on a desktop OS, no. If you want a full-featured version of SQL Server that *will* run on a desktop, you need the Developer Edition.
