SSMS application canot start

  • I have a sql server developer edition installed on a windows 7 64 bits computer.

It works fine after I installed oracle client on the same computer.

Then when I click sql server management studio, it says application cannot start. The same thing happened with Visual studio.

I fixed it by repair SQL server installation.

    It worked for two days.

This morninng when I start ssms, it shows again the message.

I fix it by repairing sql server again.

    What could be the reason?

    Thanks

  • What do the Windows logs show?

Any antivirus software that thinks SSMS is malware?

Any restores to prior system states?

    Any patches/updates?

  • No any updates and patches installed between.

  • Anything in the logs?

  • I did see some event error logs after it is fixed.

    .NET Runtime Optimization Service (clr_optimization_v2.0.50727_32) - Failed to compile: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\Tools\VDT\DataProjects.dll . Error code = 0x8007000b

    Does this mean something?

  • Try updating .NET on that machine. Also try re-installing your SQL tools.

Do you have any third-party add-ons for SSMS? Like some of the Red Gate tools? If so, you'll want to update those as well.

  • This happened again the 4 th times in last two weeks. I click SSMS, and got an errro, cannot start application.

I fix it the fourth times too, by running SSMS client install.

It will last a while, but not sure how this was triggered.

    Any ideas?

I restart my computer just now and checked again, it works. So puzzled what triggered it.

I checked the version it is SQL 2008 SP2, dev edition
