SQL Server Management Studio installation

  • I'm trying to install SQL Server Management studio 2K8 on my 32 bit workstation (8 gig of RAM, plenty of HDD space) and upon running it I pick the "New Installation or add features to an existing installation" option in the install GUI, but when i do.. I get this error...

SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:

Version's parameters must be greater than or equal to zero.

    Parameter name: build.

Any thoughts on this would be sincerely appreciated!

    Thanks..

  • Where did you get the installation media?

I would consider trying different installation media.

  • What version is the pre-existing one ? Just making sure you are installing only 2008 client tool ssms not the database engine right?

  • Did you check the installation media(SQL Server Version) is compatible 32 bit? If it is 64 bit you would have get the error right away.

    Also retry restarting the services.

  • Hi

I have been struggling with this error for month and tried almost every googable hint.

Finally found out the the error in my case was related to an old version of MSXML 6.0 installed. Found 2 solutions.

    1) Uninstall the existing MSXML 6.0 from "Add or Remove Programs"

    2) Before running setup.exe, upgrade your existing MSXML 6.0. This can be done by executing msxml6.msi from the SQL Server media.

    Brgds,

    Carsten
