Best SQL Monitoring Tool for Realtime Perfmon Alerts

  • I need a tool that will give me real time alerts when Perfmon / sys.dm_os_performance_counters reach a threshold. I have 30 instances and 5TB of data to manage and I want to be as proactive as I can. I have a PDF of recommended counter thresholds from Quest and I want a tool to plug these thresholds into.

I have not used SCOM before but someone who has told me that SCOM is not the best tool for the job I have in mind. I think we will have some money to spend so I'm wondering what the best tool is I should be using for these real time counter alerts.

Thanks very much for your time.

  • If you are looking to buy a tool, there are several offerings from vendors that specialize in SQL tools: Red-Gate, SQL Sentry, Idera, Quest etc. Many of the features / options are very DBA friendly and have real time monitoring as well.

  • I'm not sure why someone would say that SCOM is not good for that type of job. In fact SCOM is pretty much designed around specifically that. It would be on my short list of possible monitoring products.

Most of the major vendors products are going to do what you need. 30 instances is moving up into the mid-range of what vendors can support. Yes, I'll recommend Red Gate SQL Monitor for you, but I think you're around the top of what we currently support.
