inserts are sometimes failing in one particular large table,
But reads work fine. what's a good approach for repairing the "type" data? bit of a newbie, and I have no idea how data is store in MSSQL. Separate indices? Type data? Can it be reconstructed from the data itself? Any suggestions welcome!

In order for those who want to help you with a tested solution can you post the table definition, some sample data and what error Messages are displayed. Following the technique in the article whose link is the first link in my signature block would be of great help. Simply click on the link and follow the suggestion and code examples in the article.
If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.
