The Romans used look up tables for multiplication and division; their system was too ugly for simple algorithms like we have. Later European used look up tables for Egyptian fractions before we had decimals. (An Egyptian fraction is a sum of unit fractions 3/4 = (1/2 + 1/4), and the goal was to use teh smallest number of unit fractions to express a quantity).
