Relations with your Network Admins

  • How are your relations, as a database professional, with your Network Systems team? Has the company formally challenged them, or helped them, become competent in supporting sql server? Areas where I see issues are 1) in using Microsoft defaults when installing sql server, almost never correct for our environment 2) not knowing how to properly size or check performance of network components to be used with sql server ( e.g. Sans ) 3) network/sql server permissions.

In our case it may just be overload, but I'm thinking it's going to take some courses, book purchases or perhaps simply lots of googling for them to really support a new database environment like this.

  • Mine have typically been good. In small companies, I've usually worked closely with them, and had us backing up each other. In larger companies, often the DBA has been a part of the sysadmin group.

For all of those items, it's an educational model. Develop some docs, or better yet, build them a FineBuild[/url] package that makes it easy for them to install SQL. I've not usually had issues if I show them what I want, and how to get it.

For backing up me, I have typically had them escalate calls to me if they don't understand. Then when a call is escalated, I write up, or go sit and talk with them about what I did. Give them information, and perhaps next time they won't need to escalate the same issue.
