I am looking at downgrading SQL 2000 from Enterprise to Standard editions on a 32-bit platform with Win2003 Std SP2, 2 quad core processors, 8GB Ram, and 8 DBs with 1 sized at 120GB. With MS true-up coming, we are cosidering a downgrade of editions and eventually migrate to SQL 2005 STD. Has anyone successfully completed an in-place downgrade of SQL 2000 Enterprise to SQL 2000 Standard edition or a migration from SQL 2000 Enterprise to SQL 2005 Standard?

I think your only option is uninstall Sql 2000 EE and install Sql 2000 Std and restore the databases from backup, script the logins before uninstalling etc..

u could do from SQL 2000 Enterprise to SQL 2005 Standard, but when thinking off in place upgrade its a risk u shouldnt take when u can, if u cant then u have to install 2005 with named instance, migrate logins, jobs and linked server, and every server level object, then backup restore. every thing should be fine and u can always use the upgrade advisor first.
but down grading from 2000 i dont know for sure u should try it on a test server first.

I don't see any point in trying to go to 2000 Standard before upgrading to 2005 Standard. Your question should be "Can I upgrade from 2000 Enterprise to 2005 Standard without any problems?". It could save yourself time and a lot of headaches.

Steve has stated the question well and I don't think this is supported. I think the intention is that you'll only stay the same or upgrade versions, not downgrade to Standard, despite that fact that many people would do this with the memory limits removed.
The upgrade matrix (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393.aspx) doesn't show this as valid or probably supported. I'd uninstall, then install 2005 if you need to.
The side/by/side with a named instance would work as well if you can do that.
Keep a good backup.

Currently we are also running 2000 enterprise and considering going to 2005 standard on a new server since we don’t seem to be using anything that is offered in enterprise. The price points are really compelling for the standard edition. Any thoughts on why we would consider staying with
the enterprise edition.

I am considering a side/by/side migration from SQL 2000 Enterprise to SQL 2005 Standard on the same hardware platform, if that is possible. I plan to set up a VM test environment to test the install and migration process. If anyone has completed this, please comment. Thanks to all.

I will ensure that Standard can be installed on a server where Enterprise is already present and Enterprise can be uninstalled where Standard exists. Has anyone successfully completed that?

yes no problem just make sure about the directories u r installing in.
if think it is better to install every version on a different directory.
