error occurred during 2187 hot fix installation

  • When I apply 2187 hot fix on a sql2000 sp4 named instance on a cluster virtual server I got the following error message:

    *** Shared String ID - 1073741819 Not Found ***

I've restarted all 4 nodes and trying to apply this hot fix again but I could not check the Instance box to do that. The version remains 2039.

Is there any way to resolve this issue?

    Thank you,

    Serhiy

  • Did you apply your hot fix from the active node?

  • Yes, I did it from active node

  • I am not sure I fully understand your question. To apply service pack or hot fixes on a cluster, sometimes, we only need to apply it on an active node. Sometimes, we need to apply it on each node. It depends the contents of the service pack/hotfixes.

If the above is not helpful, would you please to describe your case in more detail?

  • Thank you for your help.

We have 4-nodes cluster (W2K3 x64) with 3 virtual servers. Each virtual server contains one named SQL Server instance (2000 EE x86)). I installed hotfix 2187 from the node that owns the resources of the SQL instance that already has SP4 and should be upgraded to 2187. When I did it second time after rebooting all nodes the error that I mentioned in my first post does not appear, and I was able to check the instance name to apply hot fix 2187, but at the end of installation I got the message:

'This installation must be run from the active node. You are running it from a passive node. To proceed, cancel the installation and run it again from the active node.'

When I click 'Finish' I got the message that installation completed succefully. I've connected to the upgraded instance, select @@version and it returns 2187, but I was not sure that it is true. I've found two Microsoft articles, that, I think, related to this issue - 330391 and 913991. After reviewing them, I moved all groups that contain SQL server resources to one node (which I was remotely connected to) and applied 2187 again. The 'Instances to Update' page shows me all 3 instances, and, as I supposed, the version for previously upgraded instance appears as 2039, not 2187. So, I selectes all 2039 instances for upgrade, and that time it has been completed without errors. Check @@version again and it returns 2187 for all instances.

Could you please comment how correct this way to apply hot fix 2187 on given configuration?

    Thank you,

    Serhiy

  • In my memory, we need to select which instance(s) we would like to apply either service pack or hot fix if there is more than one instance on a cluster. Did you do so?

The right (safe) approach is to run your hotfixe on an active node for one instance. Then, failover to another node. Then, apply your hotfix on this node again. It is true that you do not need to do so (the second one) sometimes.
