It's not often I get to play Santa Claus. Usually Christmas, kids' birthdays, my wife's birthday and that's about it. Those are the few times that I get to buy stuff for someone else and really enjoy the buying as well as the anticipation.
Last week was another one of those times, wandering around Best Buy looking for things to buy for the SQLServerCentral.com community members that registered for the PASS Summit. I enjoyed looking for gifts, buying them and anticipating the giving away at our reception on Tuesday night.
Today was another one of those days. Andy and I were out in Dallas, arriving early for the conference and getting some last minute things ready. We stopped by Starbucks and loaded up on some gift cards to give away throughout the week. Then another trip to Best Buy, loading up on a few more things to give away. We walked around looking for the things that we thought geeks would like and ended up going for more prizes rather than bigger ones. A few more interesting ones than announced last week, but definitely more presents to give out.
It was a long day with an early morning, so we're not much into wrapping presents, but we'll wrap the DVDs, including some blank cases for the reception. I'm hoping that people picking random gifts will go over well and everyone will enjoy casino night and 20 lucky people will take home some enjoyable gifts.
If you're not at the PASS Summit this year or didn't register with the "SSC" source code, change that for next year. SQL Server 2005 migrations will be in full swing and there will be a year's worth of information to pass along to everyone based on SQL Server 2005 experience in the real world.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark - The Danish Air Force said Thursday it paid 31,175 kroner ($5,032) in compensation to a part-time Santa Claus whose reindeer died of heart failure when two fighter jets roared over his farm.
The animal, named Rudolf, was grazing peacefully at the central Denmark farm of Olavi Nikkanoff, when the screaming F-16 jets passed overhead at low altitude in February.
The reindeer collapsed and died, leaving Nikkanoff with the prospect of only one animal pulling his sleigh next Christmas.
He complained to the air force, which agreed to compensate him for the cost of the reindeer and veterinary expenses.
"We got a letter from Santa complaining about his reindeer's death and looked into it seriously," said air force spokesman, Capt. Morten Jensen.
The air force checked flight data and veterinary reports and concluded the planes likely caused the animal's death.
"We're more than happy to pay if it means that children around the world will get their presents," Jensen said.
Nikkanoff said he was satisfied with the compensation and would use it to buy a new reindeer before Christmas."

If they don't appreciate you getting gifts for others while playing Santa you can send these gifts to me in ANY month January through December including June and July. Also if Vinny and David and GPF2^192 don't need gifts 11 month of the year they can also send them to me.
One of the latest gifts I had for my birthday last Friday was a call at 5 PM from a developer who had a problem and I worked with him till 7 PM and then from home over the phone while having a cup of tea with birthday cake. Yah, it comes with the role...
