Summary tables including dimensions?

  • Hi all
I have some very simple dimensions tables and I'm thinking of including these into the summary tables to save on joins etc. The summary table is truncated every night so it's not a major issue. Does anyone have any views on this? I've done this for years in my old job and it works well.

    Thanks
    Mattie

  • It sounds like what you are referring to is a "junk dimension."  These can be used to avoid several small dimensions that have only a few answers to each.  They are combined as a Cartesian product and independent hierarchies are created.  I've also used these to combine four survey questions each with 10 answers into a single dimension.  I've heard the occasional objections to these.  I don't find the reasons for the objections compelling.  In my view it makes the cube less intimidating by reducing the number of dimensions.
