Advice with a Server Migration / Change in Raid Drive Setup for SQL 2008 R2

  • Production Server

    Dell PER510 64GB RAM 12x 600GB SAS 15k Drives as 3 Raid 10 1.2TB each in size

    Destination Server

Dell PER730xd 128GB RAM 7x 4TB 7.2k Drives as 1 Raid 5 (Storage server being re-purposed due to speed and higher memory capacity)

Has the PERC H730Mini installed, could get the H730 which has 2GB cache as the mini has 1GB

    Unused Currently

    Dell PV MD1200 w/12x 600GB SAS 15k Drives unconfigured.

The Production Database Data Drive is at about 850+ gb now with roughly 120gb left free. The Log drive is at about 792gb with 324gb left. and the Temp drive is at 41GB used with 1.02 free.

To explain the Log and Temp, prior to the daily backup, the full backup from the previous day is moved from the Log drive to the temp drive. After the current day's backup has completed, then the Backup on the Temp Drive is Deleted.

To start off I guess I need to figure out the Final Raid Setup? (Sorry I'm an accidental Admin, I'm mainly a DB/.Net Programmer that fell into this position.)

Databases are the main application database large foot print, report server database, and small application with a small footprint.

Current Production setup. (ignoring the internal OS drives)

    12x 600gb SAS 15k Drives

    Raid 10 1.2TB Data drive D:

    Raid 10 1.2TB Logs drive L:

    Raid 10 1.2TB Temp drive T:

    Destination setup

    12x 600gb SAS 15k Drives (main chassis)

    12x 600gb SAS 15k Drives (MD1200 attached, H800 cards)

    Main chassis

Raid 10 8x Drives for 2.4TB Data Drive and 8x read and 4x write speed gain

    or

Raid 10 10x Drives for 3.0TB Data Drive and 10x read and 5x write speed gain

    or

Raid 10 12x Drives for 3.6TB Data Drive and 12x read and 6x write speed gain

    MD1200

Raid 10 6x Drives for 1.8TB Log Drive 6x read and 3x write speed gain

    and

Raid 10 6x Drives for 1.8TB Temp Drive 6x read and 3x write speed gain

Can probably mix the MD up some such as increase the size of the Log drive to allow for multiple backups to be stored.

and decrease the Temp Drive to allow this.

Also not sure if having the Temp drive on the MD1200 and not the Main Chassis would be a performance hit.

As you can see I'm quite at a loss for how to configure the above, let alone after that how to handle the below.

    1. I need to find out if I should stick with the H730Mini or get the H730 prior to the move. Thoughts?

    2. How to do the move. Since I have 24 of the 600gb drives and the 7 drives that I won't be retaining on the destination Server.

    A. My first thought is to move the empty drives from the MD1200 to the destination server.

    B. Then configure the Data Raid, since I need more space for the database to grow.

    C. Restore the Data to the destination server's Data Raid.

    C. Then Transfer the Production server's drives to the MD1200 and attach it to the destination server.

    D. Then configure the remain Raids.

    E. Then Restore Log and Temp Data to the Destination server's Log and Temp Raids.

    3. Other option that I am unsure if possible.

    A. Move the Production Servers Drives to the Destination Server, and then add any extra drives needed to expand the Raids to the Destination Server.

    B. Expand the Raids(not sure if this is possible or will wipe the data).

    C. Hope that worked and repeat for the remaining raids Logs and Temp.

Then figure out what to do with the now old Production server.

Any and all advice would surely be very much appreciated.

    Thank you in advance,

    Brian
