BIDS 2008 R2 won't remember SQL login password in data sources

  • I switched to a new Windows 10 computer, and I have some report projects written using BIDS 2008 R2.

I installed BIDS and all patches that I can find. But whenever I open a report project that has data source that users a SQL login, it "forgets" the login and password. Every time I open the project I have to edit all of the data sources and supply the SQL login and password. It will remember it as long as I keep the project open, but close it and it goes poof.

It does not do this on my old (Windows 7) computer.

Not sure if it matters, but I have all my projects under TFS 2010.

Any ideas? I saw a few references to the problem in a web search, but no real solution. On MS Connect, it was referenced as being fixed in a SQL 2005 hotfix, but nothing for 2008.

  • We have had the same thing on our server side with new people (myself as one) who edits a report and then the data source wipes itself.

When you installed all your items on the new machine did you add yourself as administrator when you installed? Also do you open BIDS as administrator?

I find this gets around some of the issues but I will watch this with interest as we are having similar here.

  • I am an administrator on my machine. I do not run BIDS as administrator, but I just tried it and it doesn't help (but it was a good idea to try).

    It's insidious...

    Are you on Windows 10?

  • What is the Protection Level of the package set to? (DontSaveSensitive, EncryptSensitiveWithUserKey, EncryptSensitiveWithPassword, EncryptAllWithUserKey, EncryptAllWithPassword, ServerStorage)

fwiw We store credentials like that either in an XML config file or in a Configuration table in a database. We find it a bit easier to manage.

  • What package? This is an SSRS report. It works fine on the server. It's when I open it on my PC to edit the report and use the Preview function in BIDS.

SSRS stores the credentials in the data sources that are in the project.
