As part of the installation wizard, you will be given a list of processes that are running that will make a reboot necessary. You can stop those processes and re-run the check before continuing. Beware, though - I've been through this before and still had to restart. It's worse on SQL Server 2005, but I still wouldn't rule it out as a possibility on 2008.
