Cluster Shared Volumes & SQL Server 2014

  • Hi all,

We are in the process of migrating to SQL Server 2014 from SQL Server 2008 R2 and are looking at the new feature Cluster Shared Volumes to help us get around the issue of nearly running out of drive letters on our current SQL cluster.

I've watched the Step-by-Step to Deploying Microsoft SQL Server 2014 with Cluster Shared Volumes presentation and also read through some other Microsoft documentation.

Was wondering what peoples experiences are of implementing and using this feature, what gotcha's there might be connected to this feature i.e does it support FILESTREAM , Analysis Services. Are all application able to utilise this feature ?

Is there a better way to overcome the issue of running out of drive letters, we aleady use mount points for our logs and tempdb luns.

    Many thanks in advance

    Francis

  • Hi Francis,

Generally speaking, I like the new Cluster Shared Volume support with SQL Server 2014 feature a lot, and I have deployed it to one production active-passive cluster built on top of Windows 2012 R2. I did run in to one big "gotcha." That is, SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) 2014 does not support CSV oddly. So, I had to use drive letters for data and temp drives for our SSAS instance.

Not sure about FILESTREAM support; that is not something that we were using, and I did not research it.
