Sql Server 2012 On Oracle ZFS Storage

  • Hi,

Apologies if this post is on the wrong forum, I was unsure as to where to place it.

The company I work for are currently in the process of replacing their existing SAN and we are currently testing out an Oracle ZFS with the following configuration:

    1 x single head ZS3 with 256GB RAM, 2 x 20 x 900GB 10krpm HDDs, 2 x SLOG SSDs, no L2ARC SSDs

Configured RAID1 NOSPOF ZFS pool (mirrored between JBODs, mirrored SLOG SSDs)

    Dedicated GbE management connection

GbE data connection, potential upgrade to 3 way LACP later

Data connection is the performance limiting factor

    IPMP will not be used.

NFSv3 presentation to VMware environment, allowing more detailed analytics observability than iSCSI

iSCSI presentation will not be used

Configured general project with VMware NFSv3 share for VM OS boot

Configured MS SQL server project with VMware NFSv3 share for database specific vmdks

The storage will be used to host 5 Sql Server 2012 instances, VMWare, Exchange and a number of other applications. From the Sql Server testing we have done so far the hardware is looking really responsive and we like the SAN UI and how scalable and cost effective the storage is.

The problem is, neither Oracle or two resellers we have spoken to are able to offer a reference site for us to contact/visit. The sales guys are saying they've sold loads of Oracle ZFS devices to clients running Sql Server but when we ask about a reference site they go quiet. We also haven't been able to find much out online.

Therefore we are wondering if anyone has seen Sql Server running on an Oracle ZFS and what their experiences/opinions were?

    Thanks very much,

    Chris
